Today started with a trip into Hexham to see the Abbey. There has been a church for over 1,300 years since around 674AD. It was destroyed however rebuilt in 1860. In1537 HenryVlll took the posession but but they were returned in 2012. The Abbey was built using remnants of Roman buildings which can be seen throughout the Abbey which is rather unusual. We got to go into the crypt and walk the 13th century night stairs trodden by the cannons.
Next stop Housesteads Roman Fort. This was a fascinating site with amazing views of the wall. A bit of a uphill hike but well worth it for the spectacular views of the countryside. We got to walk along the wall for a bit to reach the most popular picture spot of the wall. I think this is the only spot you can actually walk on the wall. Had some rain but not too bad and still 19 degrees.
We then moved onto the Vindolanda Roman Forte. This was much bigger than Housesteads and they are still excavating the site. I was lucky enough to be watching when one guy pulled a piece of crockery from the ruines. This site was occupied for over 300years by the Roman's and has had ground breaking discoveries including writing tablets and over 600 leather shoes.
We then went to the Roman Museum which had a 3D movie on the Vindolanda site and the wall which was excellent. If I knew better I would have done this first before doing any of the wall or forts as it gives you a great insight. Still good however and Noel loved it.
Time now to leave the wall and onto Gretna Green where we saw a wedding take place and took photo for another couple who also got married there. Bought some Wallace tartan including dogs leads for the boys.
Time now to head to Friars Carse in Dumfires where Noel can use his Laird title. What a spectacular place. This place is truly amazing and we feel very special staying in this old Friary. Set on the river Nothing it has the most beautiful walks, Just wish the dogs were here. Dogs can even stay here with you as they can everywhere we have stayed.
Dinner was delicious, we both had the 28day aged fillet steak with green peppercorn gravey, yum yummy yum. Cracked the Damsons Gin and had a hot bubble bath to relive the knee. Can't believe it is still daylight at 9.30pm.
